A brief local history

Battersea — the shape of the place, and its roofs.

Battersea — from Badric's island or Patrics's eye, referring to an early Saxon landholder and the low-lying, marshy character of the land — was one of South London's ancient settlements. The riverside ferry at Battersea had been in use since at least the thirteenth century, and Battersea Park was laid out in 1858 on what had previously been the open Battersea Fields, famous as the site of the 1829 duel between the Duke of Wellington and Lord Winchilsea.

Serious residential development began in the 1860s with the opening of Battersea Park and the coming of the railways. Long grids of terraced housing rolled south and east from the Park, accommodating the growing population of railway workers, clerks and artisans who commuted into central London. The opening of Battersea Power Station in 1933, the subsequent industrial growth, and the post-war decline all affected the area's character. The Power Station's closure in 1983, the long uncertain period that followed, and the eventual redevelopment completed in 2022 have utterly transformed the northern end of the area.

Roofing work in Battersea today covers the full spectrum: Victorian terrace re-roofs, Edwardian mansion-flat maintenance, post-war council-block flat roofs, and occasional work on the new-build stock around the Power Station (though much of that is still under developer warranty). We work across the full SW11 postcode.

What we work on in Battersea

Battersea is primarily Victorian and Edwardian terrace, with significant twentieth-century infill. Prince of Wales Drive and the streets overlooking the Park have larger three-storey mansion flats and terraces with substantial pitched slate roofs. The residential grids around Latchmere and Clapham Junction are dominated by two-storey artisan terraces with Welsh slate roofs, many originally dating from 1880–1905. Clapham Junction itself has a concentration of larger Edwardian properties. Post-war council flats (Winstanley Estate, Falcon Road) have flat-roof systems typically requiring full renewal now. The Power Station redevelopment and surrounding new-build are a more recent layer with hybrid flat/pitched roofs.

Typical Battersea jobs

  • Two-storey Victorian terrace full re-roofs
  • Edwardian mansion-flat mansard and chimney repairs
  • Flat-roof renewal on rear extensions
  • Council-block and estate flat roof replacements
  • Party-wall leadwork on terraces

Local specifics

Why a Battersea roofer needs local knowledge

A general roofer from outside Battersea can, in theory, do the work. In practice, roofing decisions in Battersea are constantly shaped by local factors that an outsider doesn't know: which streets are in conservation areas, which properties are listed, which managing agents handle which blocks, which local scaffolders will or won't take on narrow-street jobs, which conservation officer handles which zone of the borough, which materials merchants actually stock what they claim to.

We've been working in this patch for thirty years. That institutional knowledge — dozens of small pieces of information that we don't even think about any more — is what lets us quote realistic timescales, realistic prices, and deliver to those estimates. It's also why our warranty-work rate is so low: when you know a street, you know what the roof is likely to be hiding before you get up there.

Practically, that means fewer surprises, quicker turnarounds, and more straightforward conservation approvals. Every Battersea client gets the same attention regardless of job size.

What Battersea clients say

A small sample of feedback from recent jobs in the area.

★★★★★

Top-floor flat in an Edwardian block overlooking the Park. Full mansard re-slate plus new leadwork. KR coordinated with the managing agent, attended the leaseholder AGM to answer questions, and finished the job to budget. Outstanding.

Rebecca H. Prince of Wales Drive, SW11
★★★★★

Mid-terrace Victorian house, two-storey. Original slate had reached end of life. KR did a full strip and recover in new Welsh slate, with a dry-fix ridge, new breathable membrane and new battens. Five days on site, left us cleaner than we started.

David P. Latchmere Road, SW11
★★★★★

Rear flat-roof extension had been leaking for years. Previous 'repairs' by other firms had just added felt layers. KR tore the whole thing down to the joists, rebuilt properly, EPDM rubber on top. Dry for two winters now.

Jenny L. Battersea Park Road, SW11
★★★★★

Emergency tarp after a tree branch punctured our roof in a winter storm. On site in about 70 minutes, and the follow-up repair the next week was top-quality. Fair price, honest communication.

Ahmed B. Culvert Road, SW11
How we quote & deliver

A Battersea roofing quote, step by step

1. The phone call or email. You ring us on 0330 223 7665 or drop a line to info@kensingtonroofers.co.uk. We'll ask a handful of diagnostic questions — property type, roof age if known, specific issues, whether you've had other quotes — and book a site visit.

2. The site visit. A senior tradesman attends at a time that suits you, typically within 3–5 working days. We'll go up on the roof if safe (often via a loft hatch and ladder, sometimes needing a tower), photograph everything, and discuss options with you on the spot.

3. The written quote. You'll receive a detailed written quote within a further 3–5 working days. It itemises materials by brand and spec, scaffold by duration, labour by day rate and crew size, and waste removal by skip. You can compare it line-by-line against other quotes.

4. Acceptance and scheduling. If you accept, we agree a start date. For smaller repairs, typically 1–2 weeks out; for re-roofs, 3–6 weeks depending on scaffold and material lead times. Deposit schedules are clear and capped.

5. The work. Scaffold goes up on day one, strip and work proceeds through the following days, and scaffold comes down on the last day. You get a daily update from the site foreman; end-of-day tidying and overnight weather protection are standard.

6. Handover. Final walk-around with you, guarantee certificate, manufacturer warranties, photographic record of the finished work, and waste transfer notes. Final invoice issued after your sign-off.

FAQ

Battersea roofing — frequently asked

Questions specific to working in Battersea. For general questions see our main FAQ page.

Can you work on the Power Station development properties?

The Power Station itself and immediate new-build flats are typically under developer warranty for the first 10 years and are maintained through the developer's appointed contractors. For properties outside warranty (older Battersea stock, or new-build past warranty), we absolutely cover the area. Wandsworth Council's access rules around the Power Station can affect scaffold placement — we handle that as needed.

What's the difference between a Battersea terrace and a Fulham one?

Structurally very similar — both are late-Victorian artisan terraces with pitched slate roofs on timber frames. The main differences are that Battersea terraces tend to be marginally larger on the ground (more generous plots) and Fulham terraces often have more elaborate front-elevation details. Roofing-wise the work is near-identical.

Do you cover Clapham Junction?

Yes — Clapham Junction sits within SW11 and our Battersea crew routinely covers it. The larger Edwardian properties around Lavender Hill and Northcote Road have more complex roofs (multiple pitches, rooftop additions) but are all within our standard capabilities.

What about the estates — Winstanley, Falcon?

We do council-estate flat roof work where Wandsworth Council or the TRA (Tenants and Residents Association) engages us. Individual leaseholders on right-to-buy flats can also commission us for flat-specific work, though in most cases the estate-wide roof is maintained by the council as part of the service charge.
