Our Services

Full-service roofing, done properly.

From emergency leak repairs to full heritage re-roofs, we carry out every aspect of pitched and flat roofing on West London's domestic and commercial properties. Every job comes with our 10-year written workmanship guarantee.

The services we list below are all carried out in-house by directly-employed, time-served roofers. We don't subcontract jobs to the cheapest available gang, and we don't take on work we can't do well. If a job falls outside our expertise โ€” a major structural conversion, for instance, or large-scale commercial single-ply โ€” we'll tell you honestly and point you to someone reputable who can help.

Below you'll find a detailed breakdown of each main service we offer. If you don't see what you're looking for, ring us on 0330 223 7665 and we'll tell you whether we can help.

01 โ€” Full strip & recover

Re-roofing & new roofs

A full re-roof is usually needed every 60 to 100 years on a natural slate or good-quality clay tile roof, and every 40 to 50 years on post-war concrete tile. The giveaway signs โ€” consistently slipped slates, soft battens when anyone walks on the roof, daylight through the boards in the loft, bitumen felt that crumbles when you touch it โ€” tend to arrive together, and once they do, patch repairs stop being cost-effective.

We strip roofs down to the rafters, inspect every timber, and replace any rotten or split members before laying new breathable membrane (Klober Permo Air or Marley Eternit Universal), new treated 50ร—25mm battens, and either reclaimed slates, new Welsh or Spanish slate, clay plain tiles, clay pantiles, or concrete interlocking tiles depending on the specification and the original roof covering.

Ridge tiles go on a dry-fix system rather than mortar bed โ€” this satisfies current Building Regulations, stops ridge displacement in high wind, and doesn't leach mortar streaks down your slates. Lead valleys and chimney flashings are replaced in new sand-cast or milled lead to BS EN 12588, typically Code 5 for valleys and Code 4 for flashings.

If your property is in a conservation area or listed, we'll source reclaimed materials to match the existing roof and liaise with the local conservation officer on your behalf. Most re-roofs on a standard three-bed Victorian terrace take five to eight working days from scaffold up to scaffold down.

Roof repairs

Most roofs don't need replacing โ€” they need repairing. A slipped slate, a cracked ridge tile, a failed mortar bed on a verge, a split in a lead valley: these are all fixable problems that extend the life of an otherwise serviceable roof by another 20 or 30 years.

We carry out single-slate and tile replacement on copper or stainless tingles, whole-section re-lays where a run of slates has been disturbed, ridge and hip re-bedding either in hydraulic lime mortar (for heritage work) or dry-fix conversion, valley re-lining where the lead has worked or split, verge repairs, eaves repairs where rotten fascia or soffit is causing water ingress into the wall plate, and full leak investigations when a roof is leaking but the source isn't obvious.

On mansion blocks and larger properties we'll often find the actual leak is a long way from where the water is appearing inside โ€” water can travel down battens and rafters for metres before emerging. Our leak investigations include a dye test where needed and a written report with photographs.

Small repairs are typically same-day or next-day. For larger patch jobs requiring a tower scaffold or a roof ladder, we'll usually be on site within one to two weeks of quote acceptance.

Flat roofing

Flat roofs are the thing West London homeowners ring us about most often โ€” because the wrong flat roof, badly installed, will fail within five years, whereas the right flat roof, properly installed, will last 25 to 50. The difference is almost always in the detail: the falls, the upstands, the termination, the junction with the pitched section.

We install four main flat roofing systems:

  • EPDM rubber (Firestone RubberCover, Classicbond): our default recommendation for domestic flat roofs under 30mยฒ. One-piece membrane, no seams for small jobs, 20-year manufacturer warranty, life expectancy 25โ€“50 years. Cool to black, so it doesn't contribute to urban heat in summer.
  • GRP fibreglass (Cure-it, IKO Armourplan): best for balconies, roof terraces and anywhere that'll have foot traffic. Resin-bonded woven mat, cures to a hard shell, 20โ€“25 year life. More sensitive to fitting temperature โ€” we only fit GRP between April and October.
  • SBS torch-on felt: three-layer high-performance built-up felt with a mineralised cap sheet. 20-year expected life. Cheaper than EPDM or GRP but requires a hot-works permit and a good installer โ€” we still use it where specification demands it.
  • Liquid systems (Kemperol, Sika Liquid Plastics): for awkward shapes, complex detailing, and overlays where strip-and-replace isn't viable. Particularly useful on Mayfair and Kensington mansion-block parapets where detailing is complex.

Every flat roof we install includes new firring falls to a minimum 1:60 pitch, new 18mm WBP ply or OSB3 deck, upstands dressed 150mm above roof line, and proper termination onto stone copings or lead. Poorly terminated flat roofs are the single commonest cause of leaks on mansion flats, and we won't leave one.

Chimney work

West London's housing stock contains an enormous amount of chimney โ€” most Victorian and Edwardian terraces have two or three stacks, and mansion blocks often have ten or more. They're also the first part of any roof to fail: exposed to the weather on four sides, sitting above the roof line where wind-driven rain hits hardest, and usually the last part of the roof anyone thinks about.

We carry out full chimney repointing in hydraulic lime mortar (for soft Victorian brick) or sand-and-cement mortar (for later hard brick), chimney flaunching renewal on the top bed, chimney pot replacement including reclaimed pots where originals are lost, full chimney rebuilds above the roof line where brickwork has weathered beyond repair, structural chimney removal with steelwork where a stack is no longer wanted, and lead flashing replacement around the base of every stack.

Chimney work sits at the awkward intersection of roofing, masonry and structural engineering โ€” which is why a lot of general roofers won't touch it. We have chimney specialists on the team who've done nothing but chimney work for 20+ years, and we're happy to handle everything from a single pot change to a three-stack rebuild with conservation-area consent.

Leadwork

Lead is the most important single material on a West London roof. Used properly โ€” hand-dressed, correctly sized for the code, fixed with copper nails into timber rolls, bossed rather than cut at corners, and lapped to shed water cleanly โ€” it lasts a hundred years and looks better as it weathers. Used badly, it splits, cracks, fatigues and fails within a decade.

We carry out full leadwork to BS EN 12588 in both milled and sand-cast lead, depending on the context. Sand-cast lead (typically Code 5 and above) is what you want on a listed property or conservation-area roof โ€” it's thicker, more malleable, and patinates more attractively than milled. Milled lead is cheaper and perfectly appropriate for most domestic flashings.

Our leadwork includes:

  • Step flashings and cover flashings to chimneys, parapets and abutments
  • Lead valleys (Code 5) with properly dressed tilt fillets
  • Lead-lined box gutters and secret gutters
  • Bay roofs, dormer cheeks and dormer flat tops
  • Parapet capping and saddle flashings
  • Decorative leadwork โ€” bullion heads, scrolls, ornamental rolls on listed work
  • Lead soakers for slate or tiled roof abutments

If you're comparing quotes and one firm is significantly cheaper on leadwork than another, it's almost always because they're proposing undersized lead (Code 3 or 4 where Code 5 is specified) or they're planning to substitute "lead replacement" products. Those products have their place but they're not lead, and they don't last like lead.

06 โ€” Rainwater systems

Guttering & downpipes

A failed gutter does more damage more quickly than almost any other roofing problem. Water that should be moving cleanly off the roof ends up running down the render or brickwork, saturating the wall plate, rotting fascia boards, and eventually penetrating internally through the eaves. On stucco terraces, a failed gutter will show as a vertical dirt trail inside six months and a major render repair inside three years.

We work with all the common gutter profiles: half-round, deep-flow and ogee in uPVC; original-profile cast iron with bolt-through joints and hopper heads for heritage properties; and cast aluminium powder-coated gutters for a modern look with a long maintenance-free life.

For listed buildings and conservation areas we almost always specify cast iron or cast aluminium โ€” uPVC is usually prohibited by consent conditions, and never looks right on a stucco terrace. We stock the Cadogan and Grosvenor estate profiles and can match existing Victorian rainwater goods by casting.

Gutter cleaning and inspection is done by hand from ladders or a mobile tower, with debris bagged and removed. We also carry out full rainwater-system redesigns where modern drainage standards require more downpipes, larger hoppers, or re-direction of discharge to soakaways or surface-water drains.

07 โ€” 24/7 callout

Emergency repairs

Storm damage, active leaks into habitable rooms, fallen chimney masonry, detached flashings after heavy wind, and anything that makes your property unsafe or insecure โ€” these all count as emergencies, and we run a 24-hour callout service for exactly these situations.

Our response protocol is straightforward. You ring 0330 223 7665, we triage over the phone, and if it's genuinely urgent we'll be on site within 60 to 90 minutes in the local area. The first visit is always to make safe: tarp and baton the damaged section, stop the active leak, secure any loose material, and protect what's underneath. The follow-up visit, booked in as soon as we have the right materials and scaffold organised, is the actual repair.

Emergency callouts are charged at our standard hourly rate plus materials โ€” no inflated weekend surcharges, no "emergency premium", no separate out-of-hours call-out fee. We charge for the work, not for the urgency.

If you're making an insurance claim, we'll provide a written report with photographs suitable for submission, and we're happy to liaise with loss adjusters where that helps move things along.

08 โ€” Listed & conservation work

Heritage & listed building work

An enormous proportion of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's housing stock is either listed (Grade I or Grade II) or sits within a designated conservation area. That means most roofing work on most properties in our patch requires either listed-building consent, conservation-area approval, or at minimum compliance with locally-specified materials and detailing.

We've worked on dozens of listed properties and have ongoing relationships with the conservation teams at RBKC, Westminster, and Hammersmith & Fulham. When we quote for work on a listed or conservation property, we include:

We don't charge extra for the heritage liaison element on listed jobs โ€” it's part of how we quote, not a bolt-on.
